Mitchell endorses Obama

Today U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-5) became Sen. Barack Obama's 275th superdelegate, according to the Obama campaign. Mitchell had, like fellow freshman Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, refrained from backing either Obama or Sen. Hillary Clinton, but today came down in favor of the Illinois senator, who is looking increasingly likely to win the Democratic nomination for president.

Poll shows McCain losing national popular vote

Although locked in an oft-rancorous primary contest, either Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) or Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) would best Sen. John McCain in the national popular vote, according to a new L.A. Times poll out today.

While neither Clinton nor Obama enjoy an insurmountable lead by any means, both Democrats have improved their position over McCain since polls taken in the last two months.

Pullen claims Americans support staying in Iraq

Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy PullenArizona Republican Party Chairman Randy PullenToday in a hit on Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen used the recent endorsement of 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern to decry Obama's anti-Iraq War stance. In the piece, Pullen claimed that Americans desire a "victorious and responsible end to the conflict in Iraq," painting Obama as "out of touch" and "irresponsible" for wanting to withdraw combat forces.

Yet numerous polls indicate that Obama's view is very much in line with the majority of Americans.

Obama gaining on McCain in new poll of Arizonans

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain: Photo by Getty ImagesSens. Barack Obama and John McCain: Photo by Getty ImagesThe new Cronkite/Eight poll released last night indicates that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is creeping up on Sen. John McCain in a head-to-head presidential matchup in Arizona, and now is within single digits of the favorite son. 15 percent of respondents remained undecided. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) also improved against McCain, but still trails him in Arizona by a substantial margin.

On the local front, incumbents have cause for celebration, especially in Maricopa County. While the poll shows Gov. Janet Napolitano remains extremely well-liked midway through her lame duck term, it also indicates strong support for Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, County Attorney Andrew Thomas among those in the county who had an opinion of them.

However, in the article accompanying the poll said, its conductor, Dr. Bruce Merill, said, "Sen. McCain will win in his home state this November regardless of who the Democrats nominate."

McCain regaining lost ground among party faithful

Sen. John McCainSen. John McCainA few months ago it was Democrats who had all the momentum and the Republican Party that appeared hopelessly divided and sputtering. That situation has now reversed, as evidenced by several recent polls, including a new one out today from the Associated Press and Yahoo, that shows Sen. John McCain gaining ground among Republicans, independents and Democrats alike, while numbers for Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama remain either stagnant or dropping.
