CD1 Republican candidate Sydney Hay announced today she has lined up the support of seven state representatives and three state senators, further consolidating her frontrunner status in her primary battle against Preston Korn, her chief rival for the nomination.

The Hay campaign issued a press release saying the legislators have signed a "support pledge" naming her as their pick for the nomination. The list includes state Rep. Bill Konopnicki (R-Safford), state Sen. Jake Flake (R-Snowflake) and state Rep. Andy Tobin (R-Paulden), all of whom had considered running for the seat themselves.

The full list, as given by the Hay campaign, reads:

"Senator Jake Flake and Representative Bill Konopnicki of District 5, Representatives Lucy Mason and Andy Tobin of District 1, Senator Ron Gould and Representatives Nancy McLain and Trish Groe of District 3, and Senator Jack Harper and Representatives Judy Burges and Tom Boone of District 4."

Sydney Hay has heard it all, she is too conservative, she can’t raise the money, she won’t be able to attract Independent voters, she won’t be able to withstand the Republican establishment once they find a candidate. Well here she is, almost certainly on her way to the Republican nomination in Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has endorsed District 1 Congressional candidate Ann Kirkpatrick, a former Flagstaff State Representative and Sedona City Attorney.

State Rep. Andy Tobin, a Prescott Republican, has formed an exploratory committee and is close to making an official campaign announcement in the race to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi in Congressional District 1, PolitickerAZ.com has learned.

In the Inside Edge yesterday we listed a number of potential Republican candidates for the open CD1 seat. One of the names we listed was State Rep. Andy Tobin. We have confirmed today that Tobin is indeed looking at the race and has formed an exploratory committee. As of right now Sydney Hay is the only confirmed Republican running for the seat. Republican Sydney Hay, who finished a close third to Renzi in a crowded 2002 primary, is the leading Republican right now for the 1st CD which is open with the retirement of Congressman Rick Renzi. With State Rep Bill Konopnicki announcing he won’t run for the seat a shuffle has begun to find another Republican to enter the primary. Former senate President Ken Bennett is a rumored candidate, but to date has yet to say he has interest in the seat. This is a look at some other potential candidates for the seat.
