There was a time when you never knew a journalist's political preference. There were civilized discussions where it was important to present both sides, but that didn't mean bending/spinning the facts.

Then money entered the picture. Liability concerns came with the money, because now news was a business, not an exercise in informing the public. From there we slowly gravitated to news as entertainment, and finally we've arrived at news primarily serving as propaganda.

The public may not be as well informed as we could be, but we are not as oblivious as the media may think. The internet, for those who have the time and access, provides the vehicle for serious fact finding. The Edwards story is but one example. Internet research provided enough data several months ago to substantiate the story as a valid news item.

There are substantiated stories (not sexual) which could significantly damage McCain, Hillary, and could destroy Obama.

Yet I've not seen one of those stories hit the mainstream media (MSM). Yesterday I listened to O'Reilly on Fox news talk about the MSM covering up for Edwards - as though Fox news is not mainstream, and despite the fact they too are sitting on stories, particularly about Obama which I suspect they will air in the months after the Democratic convention ends.

As news organizations consolidate and merge, journalists are losing jobs in the hundreds. Some of them are even moving to India when journalism is still valued for more than just a controlled profit and propaganda center. Serious investigative reporting in today's world revolves mostly around finding lost children, murdered wives, and subversive citizens. Political reporting alternates between cover-ups and "gotcha" news.

As I watch all of this I'm ever mindful that the MSM is made up of people like you and me. Politicians still need our votes to get elected and we still have all the power. After all, when did Edwards finally admit his lie? When he could no longer control the MSM. The question is - are "we the people" willing to do what it takes to demand our First Amendment rights be provided in the way our founding fathers intended?
