"They have about as much hope of winning in Arizona in 2008 as a snowman does in Phoenix in August," said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen today, regarding the Democrats' hopes of an AZ victory in the presidential contest. "If Mr. Dean actually thinks either Senator Obama or Senator Clinton can defeat John McCain in his home state of Arizona, Mr. Dean isn’t just screaming, he’s dreaming.”
He was responding to a Democratic National Committee-organized conference call earlier today, in which state party leaders from Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Utah touted signs that the Democratic presidential nominee would fare well in the West - including perhaps Arizona.
"This is possibly the dumbest thing to come out of the DNC," continued Pullen, "since they first defended Senator Clinton’s accusations of a vast right wing conspiracy or tried to cast a favorable light on Senator Obama’s ability to skip vote after vote after vote on truly significant issues."
It must be noted that it was Arizona Democratic Party Executive Director Maria Weeg who posited that Arizona was potentially "winnable" for the eventual Democratic nominee. However, the Democrats have famously been pursuing a "50 State Strategy" under Dean's tenure as DNC chairman.
Pullen believes that Democrats are employing faulty logic when they assert that Sen. McCain is weak in Arizona because he only garnered 48% of the vote in the Republican primary.
"“In recent surveys in every part of the state I’ve seen, Arizona’s home-state candidate John McCain beats either Senator Clinton or Obama by double digits and in some cases by margins of two-to-one or more.”
