Technicality keeps Brown on ballot in AZ-1

Jeffrey Brown, Democratic candidate in the 1st Congressional District, will be on the primary ballot in September, after thwarting an attempt to remove him due to a lack of valid petition signatures.

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge found that although Brown's nominating petition did not contain a sufficient number of valid signatures to qualify him for the primary ballot, the challenge was made too late to have an effect.

Bethany Hicks, the presiding judge, wrote:

"Irrespective of the fact that the Plaintiff challenger has proved... that the Defendant candidate does not have sufficient valid signatures, the Court finds that because the action was not served within the twenty-four hour time period after filing... this court lacks jurisdiction and the challenge is invalid."

The challenge was made by Stanford Lerch, an attorney who has contributed $500 to the campaign of Howard Shanker. Shanker is facing Brown in the four-way Democratic primary in the 1st district.

Enough

Enough with the Maupin stuff already. He has no chance.

It's a mess

The petition stuff is all a bunch of garbage. The partisan candidates keep fighting and the independent candidate in CD1, Brent Maupin, looks better and better.

Jeffery Brown Should Drop Out

Jeff doesn't have a clue.He thinks he can garner enough votes from GLBT community alone to wine?I think not.A one issue candidate can't represent the majority of us so he should just act like a grownup and drop out.Equality includes MUCH more than GLBT and if he does not understand that then he does not understand the stakes at risk here in this district. As a GLBT member and supporter of our causes, I would not attempt to support this guy.

CD-1

So Jeff Brown actually doesn't have enough signatures to be on the ballot? Don't you only need 700 or so?
I guess it's not really clear to me what all the fuss is about; Brown clearly doesn't have much support, and the race is really between Kirkpatrick, Mary Kim Titla, and Shanker. So what if a Shanker supporter filed this? Brown is hardly Shanker's big competition. Can we just focus on electing the best candidate for this office and not get caught up in gossip?

Evan Brown Lacks Credibility

I am not seeing the connection here. If Howard Shanker had anything to do with this, wouldn't he be shouting about it, or at least sending out a press release.

I am wondering if Evan BROWN is somehow related to Jeffrey BROWN.

Howard Shanker is the best candidate in CD 1!!!!
