John ShadeggRep. John Shadegg (R-3) may be in favor of a guest-worker program that looks like it will gain approval in the Arizona Legislature, but, contrary to a claim by the Arizona Republic, he was not on board with the comprehensive immigration reform proposal of last year, according to his office.
"He didn't support it," said Abby Winter, press secretary for Shadegg. When asked if the claim by Republic reporter Mary Jo Pitzl was false, Winter responded, "Yes, that's wrong."
Pitzl had written in the Republic:
"Shadegg was among congressional members who last year backed a comprehensive immigration plan. That plan was shouted down as providing amnesty for illegal immigrants and neglecting to first secure the border."
When the Republic story was picked up on the right-wing blog Seeing Red AZ, which also claimed Shadegg was a supporter of the immigration reforms that many called "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, the responses were not favorable, to put it mildly.
"Mr Shadegg:," read one, "if you read this, please note that at least one of your dependable donor sources has dried up. I can get this from your opponent Bob Lord."

Last try
Last try.
John Shadegg is on record opposing a repeat of the failed 1986 bill that has commonly come to be known as "amnesty." A guest-worker program would confer a temporary-status only. This is not the same as amnesty. The 1986 law allowed for a host of waivers, "forgivness" of violations that were a bar to legal immigration. That is why the word "amnesty" was seized upon.
An alien in a temporary status does not have the right to live here indefinately, does not have an ability to vote, does not have a means of bringing anyone else with them due to their status, and does not have the due process rights that citizens have if we want to force them to leave. It is a seismic difference in terms of the law and our power as a nation to deal with law breaking.
No Shadegg for Me
So Shadegg was FOR amnesty before he was AGAINST it...gotcha.
So instead of "Standing across the divide on this issue shouting at one another" we can just elect a Congressman that takes BOTH sides of the issue!!!
I agree, "We must have leadership at the federal level next January," but LEADERSHIP is NOT what Shadegg has shown on this issue.
I agree with Carol
I agree with AZ Carol- Send John Shadegg back to Washington if you want amnesty for all the illegals. His quote says it all:
“For those who want to become citizens, I think that pathway ought to be open to them.”
That is amnesty in every sense of the word.
A vote for Shadegg is a vote for Amnesty. Its as simple as that.
Shadegg is on record supporting Amnesty
“For those who want to become citizens, I think that pathway ought to be open to them.”
John Shadegg, East Valley Tribune, 12/10/06
Get your facts straight.
Get your facts straight. John Shadegg was behind a strategic move that organized 25 colleagues to sign a resolution in the house that effectively helped put the nail in the coffin of of the comprehensive Senate immigration bill last May. He didn't support amnesty, and a guest-worker program is not the same as amnesty unless it includes a guaranteed path to citizenship as one of its provisions. He wrote a piece in the National Review Online lst June that demonstrated he is both knowledgeable and foward thinking about the immigration issue.
Standing across the divide on this issue shouting at one another will not improve the problems we face as a state or nation. We must have leadership at the federal level next January, and that implies some longevity and an historical memory. We need to send John Shadegg back.
flip flop
I agree, Shadegg is a flip flopper.
Flip flopped on guest workers
Flip flopped on solar energy
Flip flopped on his support for the troops
Flip flopped on whether or not he actually wanted to represent Arizona in Congress
I say THROW THE BUM OUT!
Washington Changed Him

Sellout
I can't believe how far Shadegg has fallen since we first sent him to Washington. He has forgotten how to stand on principle, and has clearly taken to selling out the people in his district for the sake of political expediency.
So what is it, Congressman Shadegg, are you for or against amnesty...or were you for amnesty before you were against it, before you were for it again?
God how I wish you had stayed retired, and we could have voted for a REAL conservative this time around.
