Pullen sees opportunity in CD1, cautions CD5 candidates against nastiness

Today Randy Pullen, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, appeared on the radio program of Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist to give his view of the political lay of the land in Arizona. During the interview, Pullen gave an upbeat picture of the Republican Party's chances to prevent Democrats from expanding the inroads they've made over the last few election cycles.

In CD1, Pullen expressed optimism in regard to Republican chances there. He mentioned that Rep. Rick Renzi isn't running again but declined to give the reason. He also didn't mention the trouble Republicans have had getting a candidate who might be seen as more electable to run for the seat, instead throwing his support behind current frontrunner Sydney Hay, who faces Preston Korn in the primary.

"Sydney Hay has been doing quite well at fundraising," said Pullen. "We have a real shot at keeping the seat."

As for CD5, Pullen called the field against Rep. Harry Mitchell "strong," but had an admonition for the contenders.

"It's a very Republican district, and we have a good shot at getting that back," he said. "Hopefully [the candidates] will keep it a friendly primary."

Pullen explained that because the September 2 primary is a short two months before the general election, "if we have a nasty primary, it makes it difficult for the nominee to prevail." Pullen however did not endorse any of the four candidates currently vying for the nomination.
