In poll after poll, illegal immigration comes in as No. 1 on the list of issues concerning Arizonans. It's a subject that resonates across demographic lines: Republican or Democrat, male or female, urban or ex-urban. Even Hispanic voters will list this as a major concern. The term "wedge issue" seems almost invented for illegal immigration but probably not in the way the GOP has envisioned. This defining issue is now driving some of the most important fractures in the Republican Party's base and its impact is likely to be felt far beyond this year's presidential contest.
Although it was spectacularly ineffective in the 2006 cycle, many Republican politicians still see illegal immigration as a vehicle for advancement. Congress has its grandstanders like retiring U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado but Arizona locals have been sure to get in on the action. For instance, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has targeted Hispanic communities with sweeps designed to nab illegal immigrants but which also routinely net brown-skinned American citizens.
While these actions have a cheering section it's not among the swing voters who decide elections. That audience wants results but are uncomfortable when politicians like Arpaio say it's "an honor" to be compared to the KKK as he did on national television. They believe in securing the border but don't want to partner with groups and individuals that have been linked to the American Nazi Party or white supremacists.
The truth is, Arpaio is just the latest responder to an old political axiom: Defining issues cease to define if everyone agrees. You can't stand out by supporting apple pie and opposing rug burn. You have to be strident enough to prove your commitment to the base and outrageous enough to attract the attention of an increasingly jaded press. They are succeeding on their short-term objective and many Republican politicians have climbed on board for fear of getting run over.
The problem of course is that the further right the Party as a whole moves, the further its fringe must go to stand out. And so the spiral continues. The result of this sprint to the Right on immigration has been a growing divide between the GOP and the center of American politics. That is a problem for the GOP but only one of several that stem from this issue.
Evangelical voters who have been a critical part of Republican coalitions in the past are uncomfortable with the plain mean-spiritedness of the anti-immigrant movement but they also see assisting those in need as an important ministry. Economic conservatives see guest worker programs as a necessary way to meet manual labor needs and reject employer sanctions that can be draconic one-strike-and-you're-out solutions.
Naturally the biggest wedge is between the Republican Party and Hispanic voters. A demographic that can be socially conservative and was once in play for the GOP may be irreparably alienated by the branding that occurs every time Sheriff Joe goes on TV. In a state that is projected to be majority Hispanic by 2032, illegal immigration is the wedge that is likely to change the balance of power for decades to come.

GEEZ.
Let's ignore Arizonans number one concern til 2032!
This guy is a top Democrat in Arizona? What a clown! I am disgusted with the GOP in Arizona, but, this guy just confirms that the 2-party system is dead in this state. He starts off saying illegal immigration is the number one concern of Arizonans then describes any politician who trys to deal with it as "far right" and "grandstanding"? so what is his plan - do nothing - because in 24 years Hispanics will be the majority. And what an insult to Hispanic Americans assuming they are all in favor of illegal immigration? That old lie has been proven wrong over and over again.
Why is Pastor still leeching on the Congress seat
You have to be a real idiot to re-elect this bozo. He has the WORST immigration record in all of Congress. Fooled ya once, didn't he? All Pastor is interested in is bringing in his com padres from Mexico, and lining his pockets. Ed Pastor, in spite of all his money laundering still has not payed his election dues, see here:

Population projections...
for 2032 based on an increase in hispanic population as a direct consequence of illegal immigration? If that's the case, we can do something about it, and bless Sheriff Joe for forcing the issue...and BTW...illegal immigration isn't a wedge issue. It's an issue that crosses all party lines. Our republican friends as well as fellow dems almost all agree that crossing that border without proper documentation is a CRIME, and as such, law enforcement has every right to arrest, detain and deport the offenders. Even our current Gov, who could only be elected through cross-over voters, understands the gravity of out-of-control illegal immigration. Such a shame the rest of the dem party dosen't "get it". The greatest victim isn't the GOP...it's the DEMS (and John McCain).
And then he said...
Nicely written anti-Republican headline, Dave. Now if you could only write as good an article.

The Law
Excuse me, please. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue now. It is an issue of "Obey the law". Don't like it, change it the proper way by legislation and by electing representatives who pass legislation that believe what you believe. Seems to me everyone is crying foul when it was both Democrats and Republicans who worked to put this law into place.
Cheap Labor Republicans
Business conservatives see guest worker programs as a way to put downward wage pressure on labor. They give a nod and wink to employers to hire illegals by rejecting employer sanctions.
ARIZONA sees Economic resurrection after illegal aliens packing.
Take note of the upsurge in the economic living conditions of Arizona. Enactment of Arizona's strict employment law and allowing the police able to question people about their immigration status, has promoted thousands of illegal families fleeing the State. Who knows their destination California or may be...Utah? Other state are already following Arizona sudden rebound, including Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri and Rhode Island. If you like the designation of a 'Sanctuary city' or sanctuary state, keep pandering to the special interest lobby. Read about Arizona's sudden turn-around at:

ARIZONA sees Economic resurrection after illegal aliens flee
These (ICE) sweeps are a provision enacted in the 1986 Simpson/Mazzoli bill, when the first AMNESTY became law. Since then an invasion has taken place, with estimates of between 15 to 38 million aliens illegally settling here. Ted Kennedy promised no more AMNESTIES, but American fell in to a false state of trusting our politicians who have tried several times to bring us another abomination immigration law. We have seen very limited arrest and imprisonment from the aftermath of (ICE) raids. The SAVE ACT will commit larger funding for (ICE), the border patrol and other anti-illegal immigration measures. Pariah employers in corporate farms and general businesses, have not seen the interior walls of prison. Obviously we must relieve America of criminal aliens, but also anybody who flaunts the (IRCA) law. We must insist Democrats endorse the Federal SAVE ACT(H.R.4088), by phoning (2022243121) There leaders are keeping it dormant, waiting for the new presidents AMNESTY. Except that on its enactment millions more will pour across our border. The millions here already will be dwarfed in comparison to the next onslaughts, coming from third world countries. NUMBERSUSA.

Of course he is. What does he suggest? We let it get as bad as Bill Clinton did? and GW Bush did? Their inactions have left a bloody mess to clean up and now the people who are not just wanting cheap labor and easy votes are being labelled racist and strong handed by fellow Americans like David Waid...Cheap shots by David..
